Tai Chi with Patrick Johnson

This is a great class for beginners! Relax and strengthen your body and mind. Uplift your spirits as you become more grounded and balanced. Enjoy peace of mind in daily living as you practice the Taoist principals of Tai Chi with Patrick. Patrick Johnson began intensive study with Master Lui in 1979 and has been teaching in Marin since 1985.

Tai Chi Qigong

Tai Chi Qigong involves slow, circular movements coordinated with the breath. This is a low impact way to improve strength, flexibility and balance with an inner sense of well being. This class is for intermediate and advanced students.

Hiking

Women's Hiking Adventures
Instructor, Donna Simonsen

Explore some of the many magnificent trails of Marin on moderately challenging 4 to 6 mile hikes with other women from other Marin County recreation departments! This is a good class to meet others who like to walk and make new friends! Different hikes each week, you’re sure to discover an area of Marin you never seen before. Participants need to be in good health and able to hike at a twenty-five minute mile pace.

Leisure Walks

Do you find the rugged trails of Marin too challenging? Join us for easy and fun walks in the flat lands and gentle slops of Marin. We'll take time to do bird watching, admire the wild flowers and meditate on the beautiful scenery around us. This is a great opportunity to adventure outside, meet new people and enjoy the magic of nature. Length of walk is approximately 2 miles. Classes are coed. Enrollment is limited!

Drop-ins are welcome, but must register in the recreation office.

Ever want to try oil painting?  We explore the basics of oil painting while painting landscapes and still lifes in a fun, positive non-judgmental atmosphere. There will be lots of individual attentions. No need for supplies initially as they will be discussed in the first class. Has it been awhile since you picked up the brush? Having re-discovered art in mid-life, I appreciate the desire to get the creative juices flowing again. Oil and acrylic painters who want to continue, improve, widen their skills are welcome. There will be both demos and class painting of still lifes and landscapes. There will be lots of individual attention. Students may bring in their own inspirations as well. Students to supply their own materials (a list is also provided). BASKET MAKING CLASSES

This series of classes are offered twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. You may sign up for the class or for the series of classes.

Natural Basketry
See what Mother Nature has to offer! Incorporate her twigs, vines, leaves, bark, fronds and sheaths to construct a contemporary container using highly original, sculptural layering and embellishing. Tips on choosing, preparing and using found natural ingredients is part of the class. No art experience necessary!

Twined and Plaited
Weaving, criss-cross, over and under! Explore one of the oldest traditional forms of woven basketry. Develop simple and fast techniques for a variety of weaves, enjoy the process and go home with a completed basket. You will receive personalized instruction and satisfying results.

Coiled Basketry
Relaxing, ongoing, spiraling! Learn to form a strong and beautiful basket by wrapping and stitching around a foundation core, connecting in a spiral. Experiment with shape, color, pattern and a variety of stitches. Very individualized instruction. Traditional techniques with a modern approach.

Random Weave
Transform modern, urban, ordinary materials into an extraordinary, free-form vessel. No experience needed! Play with fun materials using this unconstrained basketry technique.

Wacky Basketry
GET WACKY, BE SILLY, EXPRESS YOURSELF! Bring recycled plastic, wire, rags, crazy stuff and collected junk. Enjoy an unpredictable class. Stretch your imagination while creating a free-form vessel. Beginners Encouraged. Bring: strong scissors!
