In 2021, San Anselmo adopted an ordinance to phase out gas-powered leaf blowers to reduce Town Greenhouse Gas Emissions and move towards Clean Green landscape maintenance. The ordinance also established new hours of operation for electric leaf blowers. A rebate program is still available to support residents and commercial landscapers with costs of equipment replacement. More details are available on the leaf blower page. The Town will consider expanding this ordinance to other types of gas-powered landscape maintenance equipment
What you can do?
Make a plan to replace your gas-powered landscape tools with ones powered by electricity - leaf blowers, lawn mowers, trimmers, chain saws. Take advantage of the Town’s rebate program for replacing gas-powered leaf blowers.
Using a gas leaf blower releases the same emissions driving a gas-powered car 1100 miles. One hour of using a gas-powered lawn mower is the equivalent of driving 300 miles. Gas-powered landscape equipment emits high levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx), reactive organic gases (ROG), and particulate matter (PM), creating health risks for operators and neighbors.
