San Anselmo has adopted an ordinance to phase out gas-powered leaf blowers to reduce Town Greenhouse Gas Emissions and move towards Clean Green landscape maintenance. The ordinance also establishes new hours of operation for electric leaf blowers. The ordinance goes into effect thirty (30) days from its adoption (on 9/28/2021) but will not be enforced until January 1, 2022. A rebate program will be available to support residents and commercial landscapers with costs of equipment replacement. More details are available on the leaf blower page.
What you can do?
Make a plan to replace your gas-powered landscape tools with ones powered by electricity - leaf blowers, lawn mowers, trimmers, chain saws. Take advantage of the Town’s rebate program for replacing gas-powered leaf blowers.
Using a gas leaf blower releases the same emissions driving a gas-powered car 1100 miles. One hour of using a gas-powered lawn mower is the equivalent of driving 300 miles. Gas-powered landscape equipment emits high levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx), reactive organic gases (ROG), and particulate matter (PM), creating health risks for operators and neighbors.
