Flood Protection
Certain areas of the Town of San Anselmo are subject to periodic flooding, including the historic downtown area. All businesses located in High Flood Hazard Areas should be aware of the risk prior to entering in to a lease. Flood zone information is available by contacting Town staff and at MarinMap.
Information on Town flooding and resources for how to protect your business may be found at the Town Flooding and Storm Resources page.
Flood insurance is available to commercial owners and renters to protect your building, its contents, and prevent devastating financial loss. Talk to your insurance agent about insuring your business and its contents. Typically, there is a 30-day waiting period from date of purchase before your policy goes into effect. Costs vary depending on how much insurance is purchased, what it covers, and the property's flood risk.
If you are doing significant work to a nonresidential structure (a "substantial improvement") you may be required to elevate or floodproof the structure. Flood gates are one way to minimize flood damage and are required for all commercial property in the Special Flood Hazard Area. Please see the specifications the Town has developed to assist business from flood damage.
