  1. Art Talk Tuesday: The Obama Portraits Tour

    August 9, 2022, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
    @

    Zoom

The de Young Museum is proud to present the portraits of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama by artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald as part of “The Obama Portraits Tour” organized by the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. Approximately life-size, the two paintings present a striking contrast to earlier presidential portraits and images of first ladies. Docent Joyce Thorn will share how artists Wiley and Sherald explore complex issues of identity in their work, as well as how portraiture shapes ideas about power, status, and legacy. 2. Writers in Conversation: Liz Moore, author of Long Bright River

    August 9, 2022, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Join us for an enthralling evening with New York Times Bestselling author Liz Moore as she discusses her international bestseller, Long Bright River, and her other works. Long Bright River takes place in Philadelphia where Moore has lived for over a decade. The novel traces the story of two sisters estranged from each other but bonded by their choices. Mickey is a copy, and Kacey lives on the streets in the clutches of addiction. When Kacey suddenly disappears during a string of mysterious murders, Mickey panics over her sister's safety -- becoming obsessed with finding the culprit and her sister before it's too late. Drawing on deeply personal volunteer work, Liz Moore spins a story that is both graphically honest and dignified. Long Bright River puts a very human face on the effect that addiction can have on generations of families and communities.
